Leerdoelen - Learning goals
The course aims to provide you with an profound understanding of the theoretical background of the many fields of modern biotechnology and their large range of applications. 

After completion the course, the student is able to:
  • give examples of different forms of research within the different fields of biotechnology,
  • explain the molecular techniques underlying biotechnology and to interpret data obtained from these techniques,
  • critically read primary literature related to the field of biotechnology,
  • discuss the ethical and legal problems related to biotechnology,
  • give a well-founded opinion on biotechnological applications,
  • translate biotechnological knowledge into a business idea.

The level 2 courses Moleculair Genetische Onderzoekstechnieken (MGOT) or Molecular Biology and Biochemical Techniques (MBBT) or courses of similar content.

Inhoud - Content
Biotechnology is a broad term for all technology that utilizes biological systems, living organisms or parts of this to develop or create different products. This course covers topics ranging from the development of climate-resilient and herbicide-resistant crops using CRISPR/Cas till the development of SARS-CoV-2 vaccines and the usage of fungal materials as bio-bricks. The course aims to give you an extensive overview of recent developments in biotechnology and the broad array of possibilities within this field. The course will start with an overview of various molecular techniques available for biotechnology. Different topics and applications will be discussed such as metabolic engineering, food production, development of biomaterials, prevention and detection of infectious diseases and other applications of biotechnology in medicine. In addition, other aspects related to biotechnology, such as intellectual property rights, ethical concerns and the marketability of a product are discussed. Throughout the course various guest speakers from different universities, companies and institutes will highlight various career prospects within the field of biotechnology.
 

Onderwijsvormen - Teaching methods
The course is theoretical and consists of two parts. The first six weeks of the course will focus on the techniques used in and application of modern biotechnology. This part consists of lectures, guest lectures, self-study, tutorials and assignments (individual and group).The first part ends with a written exam.

In the second part, you will use your acquired knowledge for inventing a biotechnological product and writing a business idea for your product. During this part, not only biological knowledge, but also other aspects of biotechnology are discussed, such as intellectual property rights, impact on society, and the marketability of biotechnological products.
 
Toetsing - Assessment
Participation during all contact moments is mandatory and everyone is expected to actively contribute to the assignments. Examination is based on the written exam, business idea and assignments. Every component needs to be completed with at least a 5.
The relative contribution of all grades to the final grade is still under decision and will be communicated to participants at the start of the course.
