Gain advanced knowledge of ethnographic research and its theoretical and practical elements, as well as a critical perspective on the practice of ethnography.
Develop the ability to conduct field research on subjects related to the arts.
Inhoud
In this course students meet and critically engage, face-to-face, with arts practitioners. But instead of guest lectures and pre-arranged site visits, students learn how to prepare and conduct field research, and explore the various ways in which this can be done.

Following a more general introduction on current types of field research (e.g. walking methods, digital ethnography, and participatory observation methods), this laboratory course trains students in experimental ethnographic research design and methodology as they conduct fieldwork in various sites of their own choosing. Classes are focused on developing the methodological skills and critical awareness to conduct ethnography in various kinds of field sites, and to reflect on the methodological, political and ethical issues arising out of this type of qualitative research engagement. Next to these weekly meetings, students are conducting research in the field (often in teams), and share their findings in the weekly meetings. This way the students get a good overview of the insights from the other groups, and as a result a better insight in current developments in the field of art and society.

Career orientation:
Students develop the requisite skills to become ethnographers of subjects related to arts and society.
