This course covers the fundamental princeples inchemical and physical oceanography, which are necessary for the interpretation of paleoceanographic records.

After this course you will have:
  1. knowledge about modern physical and chemical ocean processes that provide a basis for scientific research in the field of paleoceanography;
  2. skills to identify and reconstruct paleoceanograhic scenarios on the basis of real scientific data;
  3. improved your general academic skills, such as report preparation and data  presentation.
The course Paleoceanography is part of the Bachelor program Earth Sciences, with a focus on the track “Earth Climate and Life”. The content builds up on previous basic courses in Earth and Marine Sciences (e.g. System Earth, Marine Sciences). and prepares students for the Masters programs “Earth, Life and Climate” and “Earth Surface and Water”.

GEO-1318 gives an overview of the mechanisms governing physical and chemical ocean processes. The course prepares students for independent scientific research within the field of paleoceanography and climate variability. Paleoceanography has become an important discipline within the field of climate research, since it provides important benchmarks of climate variability, its amplitudes and timescales. A solid knowledge of modern ocean processes is necessary in order to interpret reconstructions of the past.

The course consists of lectures and computer-based practicals. The practicals can be found on Blackboard together with spreadsheets needed for the exercises. Relevant background information, literature, and lecture slides will be put on Blackboard as well.

The course is subdivided into two parts:
  1. Physical Oceanography (dr. M.Ziegler)
  2. Chemical Oceanography (prof. dr. C.Slomp)
Development of transferable skills:
  • Teamwork: practical problems will be worked on in pairs of students, who have to organize and distribute tasks between them
  • Report writing: practical results have to be handed-in in short report format
  • Data presentation: students will practice the presentation (plotting) of real scientific datasets
  • Software skills: students will use spreadsheet software Excel during the practicals
