Please note: maximum 40 students.

At he end of the course, the student will have acquired:
  1. detailed insight in geochemical processes as observed in marine environments ranging from estuaries to the deep sea;
  2. a theoretical background and practical training in various experimental techniques used in geochemical analysis of marine sediment and water samples;
  3. training of research skills and abilty to perform a project independently;
  4. training of reporting en oral presentation skills.
Inhoud
Geochemical processes play a critical role in the functioning of the earth system. This course focuses on the geochemistry of the marine environment (i.e. sediments and water column of estuaries, continental shelves, deep sea) and the analytical techniques used to study geochemical processes. The course includes training in laboratory procedures, analytical methods, data analysis and reporting skills.

The topics discussed during the lectures are:
  • Basic Oceanography
  • Estuarine chemistry
  • Geochemistry (redox) of estuarine and marine sediments
  • Analytical techniques used in geochemistry
  • Stable isotope chemistry
  • Case studies: Mediterranean Sea, Baltic Sea, Haringvliet, Grevelingen, Black Sea.
The laboratory practical involves the analysis of sediments and seawater from various environments. Each student also will write a report and give an oral presentation on a topic of choice using a selection of data from the literature and on-going research from the Geochemistry group..
