This course introduces the basic concepts, principles and methods of physical chemistry that are used to characterize the properties of earth materials, and to study the direction of chemical transformations and equilibrium states in the earth system.  By the end of the course the students are able to apply bacic thermodynamical concepts to calculate the change of state variables in thermodynamic systems
- when heat is transferred
- when work is performed by the system or on the system
- upon chemical reactions
- upon mixing of constituents.
The students know how to interpret the change in state variables to:
- evaluate whether a process can occur spontaneously
- a system is in equilibrium
- a process is reversible or irreversible
- infer the conditions at which a process can take place spontaneously
- calculate the amount of usable energy released by a process
Inhoud
A. First and Second Laws of Thermodynamics
B. Thermochemistry, Carnot Cycle, Entropy
C. Gibbs and Helmholtz Energies
D. Non-Electrolyte and Electrolyte Solutions
E. Chemical Equilibrium
F. Possibly: Equipartition of energy, intermolecular forces, quantum mechanics and atomic structure, statistical thermodynamics, chemical kinetics

Applications include: atmospheric convections, solid solutions, mineral transformations during metamorphism.
