Aims of the course

At the end of the course you:

  1. will have addressed actual socio-scientific issues in an attempt to engage a specific target audience with these issues;
  2. have learned the importance of thinking receiver-oriented instead of sender-oriented when considering science communication;
  3. will be capable of thinking strategically about science communication, especially considering the aims, target audiences, means and the central message of the communication;
  4. will be able to develop a variety of popular science communication products, specifically articles, knowledge clips, and social media posts, aimed at a specific target audience by means of project-based learning;
  5. can give and receive (peer) feedback and use this feedback to improve communicative interventions;
  6. will be able to reflect on how the products relate to the communication strategy, providing underpinnings for choices made and expected effects.

Planning and online environments

In order to successfully complete the course, you need to plan ahead. You are required to complete all assignments on pre-set deadlines and some assignments require teamwork – so be sure to plan your work and collaboration. Also, there are ten compulsory (online) meetings that take place on Mondays between 15.15 - 17.00 hrs (using MS Teams). These online meetings are divided in two time slots (45 minutes) in which 2-3 teams can interact. During these meetings, you will discuss the learning activities and each other's comments, be able to ask questions and discuss your progress. The workload is approximately 14 hrs per week. During these hours, you study literature, perform group work, work on exercises and assignments and (some of you) will take part in the editorial board meetings.

The total study load is approximately 140 hrs.

The most recent version of this manual is available in the Lifelong Learning (LLL) course under ‘Course Info’. Log in using your Solis-id. Blackboard is not used during this course.

LLL contains all:
·      video lectures,
·      literature,
·      exercises
·      assignments,
·      additional relevant documents and materials,
·      announcements.

Apart from the LLL you will be active on a blog and social media channels where you can publish the actual products. The blog can be found on https://science-communication.sites.uu.nl/. Access to your team blog-environment is described in LLL. The short manual for the blog is available via LA 0.2 of LLL. The social media channels will be set up in coordination with the editorial board.
