• The student is capable, alone and in teams, of performing a complete cycle of design, evaluation and redesign of lessons and lesson material in his or her topic of science.
• The student is familiar with the basic principles and methods of lesson study.
• The student is able to assess the educational needs of students within the context of education for his or her topic of science.
• The students can apply theories of science education in the design of lessons, justify how these theories were applied and evaluate how the theoretical considerations worked out in practice.

During the course the participants will follow a complete cycle of “Lesson Study” in which they will design a lesson (or short lesson series) on a topic in science education, related to their school subject. In seven (out of eight) sessions the design will be developed, students will create a set of observable goals for specific groups of students and will plan the actual lesson. One of the students will perform the jointly designed lesson in a “research lesson” in which the other students will observe student behaviour. After the research lesson, the lesson will be redesigned on the basis of the observations and performed again in a different class and performed in a second research lesson with a different teacher.
In an introductory session, lesson study will be introduced as well as some theoretical principles for the lesson design. During the lesson study cycle the groups will be coached on both the process of lesson study and didactical aspects of the lesson design.
