After this course you will be able to:
1. understand and implement a published bio-analysis method;
2. set up a method for the analysis of a drug in a biological matrix;
3. describe the power and problems of LC-MS;
4. process and review experimental bio-analysis data;
5. write and present experimental data in a precise and concise way.
This course is explicitly also open for pharmacy students who are motivated to set up analytical methods and have an interest in lab work. This course is comparable to bioanalysis FA-319-09 (half time), whereas FA-CPS337 is full time.
In this course you will become acquainted with the analysis of drugs, metabolites and endogenous substances in biological matrices (blood, urine, etc.).The detection of low concentrations of a compound in a complex matrix is often needed, but also enormously challenging. During this course attention will be paid to the design of bio- analysis methods, the problems encountered and possible solutions.
The theory is divided into 3 parts: sample preparation, separation and detection, followed by HPLC in combination with mass spectrometry (LC-MS). The theory is mastered by reading literature and presenting the main points in lectures to each other. During the course you will be working on the setup and validation of a bioanalytical method. The experiments are completely designed and conducted by you, with input by supervisors, mainly during presentations of your plans and results.
