Content:
This course will address different aspects of benign hematology. Students will study blood platelet function, blood clotting and the formation and function of red blood cells. In addition, this course will address the pathophysiology behind arterial and venous thrombosis and different (hereditary) forms of anemia.
Aside from sessions on the biochemistry and cell biology of hemostasis and erythrocytes, the course will address subjects like oral contraceptives and thrombosis, epidemiology of thrombosis and anemia. The students will train their knowledge in several work groups and will apply their knowledge in practical assignments. During these practical assignments, students will perform experiments in the field of platelet and coagulation disorders. In addition, students will get the opportunity to apply their knowledge in cases studies, critically review a scientific manuscript and present the data obtained in the practical assignment.

Prerequisites:
Basics of cell biology and biochemistry.

Learning objectives:
Knowledge and insight
At the end of this course, students:
  • are acquainted with the proteins and cells involved in thrombosis and hemostasis;
  • can describe the biological principles that underlie most common disorders related to thrombosis and hemostasis;
  • can describe the mechanism of red blood cell production and how these cells perform their physiological function;
  • can recognize different forms of anemia and describe the associated pathophysiology;
  • are acquainted with the basic aspects of translating laboratory tests into clinical investigations.

Skills
At the end of the course, students are able to:
  • plan scientific experiments with regards to thrombosis and hemostasis, perform these experiments and adequately interpret the results;
  • read, interpret and present literature on current themes in the research fields of thrombosis and hemostasis;
  • analyse and discuss a scientific article.

Educational methods and contact time:
The course consists of lectures, practical training and reporting, workgroups, a pitch and an exam. The practical training will be supervised by a PhD student or technician. Contact time will be 50% and consists of lectures, practical training, assignments and an exam.

Examination:
At the end of the course there will be a digital exam via Testvision. The test will consist of closed questions in different forms. Final grades will be based on the weighted average of grades obtained for the exam, workgroups and practical exercise. The exam will account for 50%, the workgroups for 30% and the practical exercise for 20% of the final grade. To pass the course, each grade has to be ≥ 4.0 and the final grade has to be ≥ 5.5.
