Course goals

1. Apply their academic knowledge, general academic skill and attitude to a project dealing with a complex real world problem

2. Analyze the context of a real-life problem and distinguish the most relevant elements for defining the problem and designing a solution; 

3. Assess opportunities offered by the existing state-of-the-art technologies and solutions and identify areas for innovation, relevant for solving a real-life challenge; 

4. Gathering, selecting and analyzing information, tools and techniques and integrating this into final project deliverables in terms of process and content at an academic level; 

5. Communicate their solutions orally or textually in a professional and academical manner; 

6. Set and reflect on personal learning goals, in a cyclic manner leading to future reflections and actions.

Lecturers, inspirational speakers, workshop moderators, domain experts, coaches and others involved will be recruited from the participating universities, the Municipality of Utrecht and from the governmental and corporate world. 

Course description:
This blended course is open to all third-year bachelor students and all master students from all different disciplines and backgrounds within TU / e, WUR, UU and UMC Utrecht. You work in multi-disciplinary teams, in order to jointly look for solutions across the boundaries of disciplines. The student teams are guided by experts in the field, such as epidemologists, policymakers, sociologists and economists, and by coaches, who support the process. At the end of the course, the student teams present their ideas and solutions. The municipality of Utrecht is the client and assesses the concepts in relation to the policy and vision of the municipality on the Covid measures.
It is a course of 3.5 EC, approximately 12 hours per week, running from April 19 to June 11, 2021. Of these 12 hours, you will have online classes for approximately 4 hours per week or participate in expert workshops. The expert sessions are usually on Monday or Tuesday morning. You will receive the recordings afterwards. The remaining 8 hours you will work with your team on your solution for the challenge and you will receive guidance from a coach.

Challenge definition
In the Covid Challenge, student teams are working on innovative non-repressive measures, in order to limit the impact of Covid-19 in the daily life of residents of the city of Utrecht. The solutions that are devised combine disciplines in the field of health, technology, economics, behavior and sustainability.
The Covid-19 pandemic represents a new reality for many people's daily lives worldwide. The municipality of Utrecht is looking for solutions for its citizens. Solutions that simultaneously comply with all current corona measures and also minimize the burden in the field of health, economy and in social intercourse. In particular, specific risk groups are examined, which are more related to the restrictive measures and who run a greater risk of being infected.

There is a limit of 30 students.
The course will be offered in English.
You will hear whether you have been admitted to the challenge by March 24. You will then immediately receive the course manual and the curriculum.
