Aims
At the end of this course, the student:
  1. has insight in the basic terminology and principles specific for clinical epidemiology;
  2. has insight in the different aspects of clinical epidemiological research (diagnostic / prognostic / therapeutic / etiologic, i.e. causal / descriptive);
  3. is able to determine a clinical research question that includes outcome, determinants and domain;
  4. has knowledge of the different study designs and design aspects used in clinical epidemiology;
  5. is able to design a clinical epidemiological study;
  6. has knowledge of the data-analysis techniques that are used for the different aspects of clinical epidemiological research;
  7. is able to choose and apply the appropriate basic techniques to analyse data of a clinical epidemiological study using the statistical package SPSS;
  8. is able to interpret the results of basic data analyses of a clinical epidemiological study;
  9. understands the concepts of bias, and the statistical issues concerning confounding bias;
  10. is able to read and understand clinical epidemiological scientific papers and recognize, in these papers, which study design and data analysis techniques were used;
  11. has knowledge of the characteristics of infectious disease transmission dynamics which require specific approaches for epidemiological designs and analysis, such as dependency between cases;
  12. has knowledge of the features of (changes in) population structures of relevant pathogens, in relation to epidemiology of infections;
  13. has knowledge of the impact of interventions on transmission dynamics and on the interaction between humans and pathogens;
  14. is able to perform specific epidemiological analyses;
  15. has knowledge of the public health relevance and response to infectious diseases;
  16. has knowledge of characteristics of infectious diseases which require specific approaches for epidemiological designs and analysis, such as patient-dependency;
  17. has knowledge of the impact of interventions to prevent transmission of infections and pathogens;
  18. illustrate features of population structures of relevant pathogens, in relation to epidemiology of infections;
  19. explain the rational and need for meta-analyses of randomised trials;
  20. list the important design features of, and critically appraise meta-analyses;
  21. conduct a meta-analysis;
  22. understands the concept of confounding;
  23. understands the different methods to determine whether there is confounding and to adjust for confounding, and is able to apply these methods in a computer practice;
  24. understands more advanced methods to adjust for confounding namely propensity score method and instrumental variable method, and is able to apply these methods in a computer practice;
  25. understands the usefulness of sensitivity analysis to estimate the impact of unmeasured confounding, and is able to apply these methods in a computer practice;
  26. understands the concept of effect modification;
  27. understands the difference between effect modification on an additive and a multiplicative scale and is able to calculate effect modification, and its confidence interval, on an additive and a multiplicative scale by hand and by computer;
  28. understands the different ways to present effect modification in a paper and can derive information on effect modification from published studies;
  29. understands the difference between effect modification and confounding.

Specialisation programme:
Each student is expected to attend so called ‘specialisations’. Each specialisation consists of obligatory and free to be chosen courses. These lecture days of choice should concise of (advanced) epidemiological or statistical courses. Listed below are the courses per specialisation.
