Course description
This course is a compulsory introduction to the fields of cancer, stem cells, developmental biology, genetics/genomics, and their associated techniques and model systems. The new students of the CSDB Master’s program will become acquainted with many aspects of their program through lectures, literature studies and demonstrations. The topics will be introduced by experts in the field, most of whom also coordinate or participate in the Theoretical Courses that are offered later in the year. This will lay a theoretical foundation, while also model systems such as C. elegans, zebrafish and organoids will be covered. These lectures will help students in their future choices for the in-depth courses. Moreover, students will get a good impression of the research that is going on, and will start building their network and community.

One day will be devoted to bioinformatics, including a hands-on session. Recent key research papers will be allocated and serve as background for presentations by the students in three dedicated sessions during the second week. Lab tours will be given in several of the institutes that are part of the CS&D research school. Ample time will be devoted to the ethical and societal aspects of performing research in these areas. Students will write an opinion article (essay) about an ethical issue of their choice, while we end the course with a lively discussion on these aspects.
