Course goals
General:
Nowadays almost all disciplines in medical and biological sciences have to deal with an increasing amount of data. These datasets get simply to large or structurally to complicated that general programs are not sufficient anymore. This is where another approach, using a programming language, such as Python, is not only very much preferred but basically essential.

Learning goals:
Primarily skills but also knowledge and insight on using Python for Life sciences research.

The aim of this course is to provide students with the basics of programming in Python.
Students will learn how to use basic functions of Python via Jupyter notebook and at the end processes files from the Ensembl biomart database using self-made scripts.

Skills
The student can:
Write a script to answer a life sciences related question. Including the following topics
  • Variables and Loops
  • Lists and Dictionaries
  • Functions and Modules
  • Figures and Regex
  • File handling
Content
Content:
In this course, the focus is on learning the basics of the programming language Python. Using examples and exercises on life-sciences related topics the individual topics are learned first, after which the focus switches on combining the different topics to practice the “logic” of programming.

After this course the student has obtained the skills to self-sufficiently use Python
