Course goals
Gain knowledge of and insight into the relationship between psychopathological development and relevant risk factors in the development of delinquent behaviour.

General:
Students who have completed this course:
  • have knowledge of and insight into the presence and development of underlying mental disorders that may lead to the development of delinquent behavior
  • have knowledge of and insight into risk factors for the development of delinquent behaviour and can use the above-mentioned insights to suggest treatment implications for youth whose problem behaviour has got them - or is likely to get them - into trouble with the police or the law
More specifically:
Students who have completed this course have knowledge of and insight into:
  • diagnostics and treatment in the field of forensics
  • the development of psychopathology and links to delinquent behaviour and recidivism in the most prevalent disorders in forensic psychology
  • academic research into the relationship between psychopathology and the risk of delinquent behaviour and recidivism
  • underlying factors that may influence the risk of recidivism and the tools that are used in clinical practice to estimate recidivism (risk assessment)
  • the implications for treatment
Relation between assessment and objective
Knowledge of and insight into the link between psychopathology, recidivism and risk assessment and treatment recommendations are assessed by means of a poster presentation assignment during the small-group session and a written assignment. The poster presentation and the paper assignment relate to the role as a behavioural expert and an expert witness in court. This will provide insight in the forensic psychologist’s task of contributing to a behavioural expert’s report.
Content
The lectures cover topics that offer clinical insights into the psychopathology in the field of forensics. Attention will be paid to explanatory models, risk assessment and implications for treatment.

Small-group sessions
During the small group sessions students work on 1) practicing critical assessment of the scientific literature on the relation between psychopathology and risk of recidivism, 2) (poster) presentations, 3) risk assessment based on case studies, and 4) integrating literature and risk assessment to advise treatment.
