Digital media have an increasingly important role in the lives of adolescents; digital media are an essential element of the social environment in which adolescents grow up. Adolescents are key persons in the field of trends in digital media use; they play an important role in te popularity of different digital media sources. Adolescents give meaning to youth culture and youth lifestyle by the use of digital media and the development of adolescents can be better understood when considering the influence of digital media. In this course the use of different media sources, (1) gaming and online video's, (2) social media, and (3) music, are discussed in relation to adolenscents' development. In this course, central themes of adolescent development are psychological wellbeing (e.g. life satisfaction, happiness, behavioural problems), social relationships (e.g. parents, peers), identity, emotion and motivation (e.g. reasons for use, habits). This course will evaluate the position of digital media in youth lifestyle and youth culture, and will reflect on the influence digital media has on the development of adolescents. In this course there will be a strong emphasize on writing skills; students will receive individual feedback and during the course students have the possibility to ask for feedback and assistance in writing the paper/essay by signing up for the consultation hours.

After completion of this course students are able to:
1. place empirical findings with respect to media use and adolescents development in perspective of important theoretical frameworks;
2. evaluate trends in adolescents media use and relate them to adolescent development;
3. contrast different perspectives and research methods commonly used in studies on adolescents’ media use;
4. translate empirical findings into a policy advise and write a well-founded argumentation.

Effort obligation
All three exams (pre-paper, final paper and exam) need to be fulfilled by the students. Students are allowed to miss/skip one tutorial. When more tutorials are skipped students receive a compensational assignment. When this assignment is not completed or not submitted on time (in consultation with teacher), the opportunity for reexamination can be cancelled by the course coordinator.
Exchange students who attend the course in november/december and have made an early exit arrangement with the International Office can finish the course by submitting the paper and exam by email. There will be an open take home exam for the early exit students. 
Entry requirements
Prerequisite knowledge
Good command of English language. Students should have basic knowledge of statistical testing to understand and critically evaluate the empirical studies that will be discussed during the course.

For this course journal articles will be used which can be found using searching engines available through the University Library.
Instructional formats

General remarks
The course consists of a series of lectures focusing on how different forms of media interact with adolescent development. The lectures will cover three different digital media sources (gaming and video, social media, music) and reflect on how these media influence adolescents' behavior. Recent empirical study findings are discussed in relation to theoretical frameworks.

Relevant empirical papers for each lecture are outlined in the course manual. Students are expected to read this literature before the start of the lecture. Lecture material is examination materia

During the tutorials students learn how to place empirical findings in relation to relevant theoretical frameworks in media research. Students work together in groups and elaborate on relevant social issues.

Students prepare an individual argumentation/policy advice as final assignment focusing on one of the three sources of digital media central in this course (gaming/video, social media and music). Students will submit a first draft version of this paper which will be assessed with a grade (10%) and individual feedback is provided. For the final assignment (60%) students incorporate this feedback and revise the first version of the paper. Paper needs to be written in English.
