Course goals
In this course, we aim to equip students with the knowledge and skills that are instrumental to effectively contribute to development and implementation of intervention and policy in practice on a local, national and international level within three social domains: 1) health and wellbeing, in particular work, care and participation, 2) youth and family, and 3) diversity and integration.

The specific objectives are to enable students to:
  1. Strengthen their understanding of and ability to apply a problem-focused approach to the scientific analysis of social issues, incorporating relevant disciplinary perspectives;
  2. Identify personal, social and structural factors that shape health and wellbeing, notably behavioral and contextual influences, and translate these into an explanatory model;
  3. Increase their knowledge of the diversity of approaches for intervention and policy development and implementation, and their ability to critically reflect on these approaches and select the most appropriate approach(es);
  4. Apply a systematic planning approach to develop a sound logic model guiding the development of an intervention or policy to address a specific social issue.
The different goals of the course are addressed in the (guest)lectures (goals 1-4), tutorials (goals 1-4) and readings (1-4). In the exam, all goals are tested. In the paper students are requested to apply their knowledge about goals 1, 2 and 3 and to an example of a social policy or intervention (goals 3).

Content
In this course students familiarize themselves with central concepts and theoretical perspectives on the development and implementation of social policies and interventions on a local, national and international level, as well as the interplay between social policies and interventions. Drawing on principles of systematic program planning, different approaches for the development of social policies and interventions are presented, with a focus on a systematic intervention planning approach, and implementation issues are addressed. Throughout the course it is emphasized that the development and implementation of social policies and interventions does not take place in a social and policy vacuum. Researchers, scholars, professionals and affected individuals and communities each make important contributions to the development and implementation of social policies and interventions. To illustrate these fascinating and important processes, examples will be provided in lectures and seminars from the domains of health and wellbeing, including work, care and participation, youth and family, and diversity and integration.
