The topic of the master thesis should lie within the domain of Game and Media Technology.
We encourage you to choose a topic that fits your supervisor’s interests and ongoing work closely.
We recommend that you check, in addition to personal websites of individual staff members, the KonJoin system KonJoin UU  for project proposal and research interests of our staff members.
You can also contact a lecturer you know who teaches and/or conducts research in your area of interest and ask them whether they have a graduation project for you.

Prerequisites
To be allowed to start with the thesis project, you must have obtained at least 67,5 EC.

Inhoud

Registration
Before starting your master thesis project, you need to fill in a research project application.
You are required to apply for approval of your research project by submitting a request via OSIRIS Student/Osiris Zaak. Please select ‘My Cases’, ‘Start Case’ and then ‘Research Project GSNS’.

Important: in order to apply completely and correctly, you must have discussed the project setup with your intended project supervisor beforehand !
We advise you to study the request form previous to discussing it with your supervisor, or fill it out together, to make sure you obtain all of the information required.

You are advised to work full time (i.e. 5 days per week), which means 40 hours per week. But 4 days per week is also allowed. In that case, please note that your project takes 25% more time to finish. Please be aware that this does not allow working on the side for more than one day per week.
External project
You have the possibility to do your thesis project at a company or government institute. In that case, one of the staff members of the department should approve the project and serve as a supervisor. As with all master theses, two supervisors from the department will grade the thesis.

The GMT staff will occasionally send calls for internships by e-mail. In case of a project or internship outside of Utrecht University, please make sure you have filled out the 'daily supervisor' section in the research project application form. If an external party hosts you as a student, you also need to provide a Work Place Agreement by Completing the UU GSNS Work Place Agreement. Please discuss possible deviations to the standard contract with the UU Science Internship Project Coordinator.

Scope constraints
The topic of the master thesis should lie within the domain of game and media technology. We encourage you to choose a topic that fits your supervisor’s interests and ongoing work closely.

Ethics and Privacy Quick Scan
If your thesis involves human subjects, you must fill in the compulsory Ethics and Privacy Quick Scan, see instructions and forms on https://www.uu.nl/en/research/institute-of-information-and-computing-sciences/ethics-and-privacy .
The corresponding moderator email mentioned in these instructions is gmt-ethics@uu.nl.

Body of the work
The MSc thesis is split into two parts: 15 EC (preparation) and 25 EC (execution). This comprises 3 periods of work (including the GMT colloquium), which is about 7.5 months of work.

The first part comprises 1 period of full-time work. The student will complete (at least) the following deliverables:

  • the MSc research application form in OSIRIS
  • a completed literature research for the project
  • a clear (list of) research question(s)
  • a skeleton of the thesis
  • a time plan for the second part of the thesis
  • a description of the research methodology
  • a plan for the evaluation of the results/outcome
After the first part, the supervisors will make a go/no-go decision. This decision is motivated by your project supervisor who will fill out the assessment form part 1. This decision will be entered in Osiris.

For some projects it may be convenient to already start with parts of the second part (e.g. develop theory or implement an algorithm).

The second part comprises 25 EC (2 periods). You will complete (at least) the following items:
  • perform and complete scientific research according to the predefined plan;
  • write a scientific report about this research. You may choose between a regular thesis (plus optional appendix), or a scientific conference/journal paper, plus mandatory appendix;
  • give a presentation about the work;
  • produce a dissemination (see below).
Dissemination
The dissemination should be targeted at a broad audience, i.e. people who do not have background in computer science. You can choose between a video, a demo, a poster, or a website. For some inspiration, please look at the examples on the website below. When you are creating a video, it is good to create a voice over. When you are creating a website, please upload the source via the site (so do not link to an external website since they will typically disappear after a few years).

The dissemination needs to be uploaded to the GMT thesis projects site: https://www2.projects.science.uu.nl/cs-gmt/ Note that your supervisor first has to log in and needs to activate your contribution before it is visible.

If an external party hosts you as a student, you also need to provide a Work Place Agreement.

Cum Laude
To receive a cum laude, your grade for the second part should be at least 8.5. Please be aware that if you do not finish in time, you cannot get a grade higher than 8.

Procedures around the completion of your project
Determine date and time to defend your thesis (preferably within the GMT colloquium). Your defense will be 40-45 minutes long: 30 minutes for your presentation, and 10-15 minutes for questions. The defense will be concluded by a discussion of 15 minute of the committee to determine the grade. After your grade has been determined, your supervisor will fill in the assessment form part 2 in OSIRIS. You also need to deliver a PDF of the final version of your thesis. Don't forget this, because this is a requirement before you can graduate! Your title page should contain the name of our institution, and a thesis number (= ICA you student number). Upload the PDF to Osiris Zaak. When your final grade is registered in OSIRIS, the administration will sent you an email confirming that your dossier will be sent to the Board of Examinations. The date on your diploma (degree = certificate), will be the last working day of the month in which your final grade is registered.
