In this course, the playing of music will be our main concern. The relation between music and play goes far beyond the playing of a musical instrument, or the interplay between musicians. In interactive media such as rhythm games and apps, in multimedial concerts and in televised talent shows, this relation is given new meaning and significance within our contemporary culture. Playful musical practices, however, can also be traced back to music-historical examples ranging from Mozart to Cage. The playful element in music is addressed in this course to relate two recent fields of musicological inquiry: performance studies and ludomusicology. Concepts and theories from these fields, such as liveness and the magic circle, enable us to shed new light on phenomena that are central to the Music and Media track, of which this course is the fourth course.

For LAS and TCS students who take this course as part of their major, preparation is required. For more information see: https://tcs.sites.uu.nl
