Priority rules apply to this course. Make sure you register for this course before June 14, 12.00 noon to be considered for enrollment.
The following students are guaranteed a place:
  • BA Media en cultuur/Media and Culture;
  • TCS and LAS;
  • premaster students.
Other students will be placed by means of random selection.

In this course, students strengthen their analytical skills and deepen their knowledge of classic and recent Hollywood film, its formal characteristics and narrative principles. This knowledge then serves as a background for considering other forms of filmmaking such as Asian and European art film. The starting point of the course is neo-formalist film analysis as defined by Kristin Thompson in her book Breaking the Glass Armor. In addition, we use part of The Way Hollywood Tells it by David Bordwell in which he defines the style of New Hollywood according to neo-formalist principles. We analyse his line of argumentation. Attention is also paid to cognitive film analysis. During the course, you will practise your analysis skills in tutorials and write various assignments that will be assessed via Blackboard, provided with general feedback and discussed in general terms in the tutorials. You will also have the opportunity to discuss specific questions with the lecturer. At the end of the course, students formulate a research question under supervision in the tradition of one of the forms of analysis taught and write a paper based on this. The film analysis skills you develop can be applied to positions in the film world such as dramaturge, programmer, reviewer and so on.

NB: The course has a strong repertoire component (compulsory) with a number of plenary film screenings and a list of films to be viewed individually.

Presupposed knowledge: this course builds on the knowledge and skills gained in MEC basic package 1 and 2 and in particular in the course Introduction to Film (year 1, block 3).

This course is the first course in the specialisation packages Film and Media Culture and Screen Cultures in Transition. In these specializations, students deepen their historical and theoretical knowledge of the object of film and train their subject-specific skills.

Students from LAS and TCS who follow this course as part of the core curriculum of their main subject are required to prepare for it. Information: https://tcs.sites.uu.nl/
