Cursusdoelen
Gaining an understanding of medieval written culture, in which knowledge of the making, keeping and using of written texts, but also of the principles guiding their study, is acquired.
Inhoud
Medieval Studies require profound knowledge of the ways written documents were made, kept, and used in the Middle Ages. Irrespective of the interests of individual scholars, no one can study the Middle Ages without having confronted the problems that handwritten documents and manuscripts pose. This is the first of two courses that are meant to provide the knowledge necessary to deal with medieval texts in the way they were transmitted originally. After a general introduction, attention is paid to codicology, the relation between images and texts, early printed books, the study of MS fragments, editorial principles, and archival studies. In three written assignments, the students will also learn how to report on their study of precise questions regarding the palaeography, codicology and editorial problems of texts and their manuscripts. There will be one excursion.

The entrance requirements for Exchange Students will be checked by the International Office and the Programme coordinator. Acceptance is not self-evident.
