Knowledge and understanding of Greek mythological stories, their original function in the Ancient Greek religion, and their significance for later European culture and identity. Basic knowledge of the most important scientific theories and debates concerning the meaning of myth.
Inhoud
Mythological stories are key elements of premodern cultures. They explain nature, give meaning to life, order society, and create identity. Greek myths in particular have moreover been of pivotal significance for the development of modern European culture(s). They are still omnipresent, in cinema, literature, fantasy, music, art and video games – but now on a global scale.

This course aims (1) to familiarize students with the canon of Classical Mythology and its reception in later periods, and (2) to help them understand the original uses and meanings of these often weird and cruel stories. The latter aspect means that a significant part of the course will be devoted to modern scientific attempts at explaining myth, especially in the context of ancient religious practices. Emphasis will be placed on the association of myths and specific sacred places in the Greek landscape.
