Aims
At the end of this module, students will have learned which method may serve which types of research questions, and will be able to assess the ethical and practical viability of each such method. They will also have grasped which methods (and their implied epistemological traditions and theoretical underpinnings) will be appropriate for pursuing their own individual research interest. Students will have learned how to express all these aspects of the methodology trajectory in oral and written form, by way of participating in in-class debate, of a team presentation, and of a written methodology assignment.
 
Content
This module will re-introduce students to the methods and methodologies that are viable in the field of new media studies in the humanities at Utrecht University. On top of this, students wil engage in meta-reflection about the conceptual underpinnings these methods; ie. they will learn about the traditions, assumptions and the explicit or implicit connections with certain new media theories in the humanities that are taught in the concomitant New Media Theories module. In connection with learning to identify the assumptions and traditions behind these methods, students will learn to assess the possible ethical issues involved in the application of each individual method and the justification in light of research ethics when formulating a methodology or research question.

Career orientation:
This module aims to teach students advanced academic professionalisation skills, and therefore will incorporate many key examples and case studies from the academic working field. Students work in teams on an actual commissioned assignment from the field of new media, and through this get to know people and organizations (and their aims, concerns and ways of working) outside of academia.

Seminar

General remarks
This module will consist of group seminar work by way of in-class practice and debate, as well as an oral presentation and a written methodology assignment. Each seminar involves hands-on practice, group reflection and supervisor feedback on specific methodologies, in relation to their theoretical counterparts as treated in the parallel New Media Theories course. Students will also deal with the ethics of doing research.

Class session preparation
Students need to prepare the assigned compulsory literature; that is read the literature and prepare a number of questions about or raise issues with the literature. Where relevant, students will ask to draw connections with the theories that are taught in the concomittant New Media Theories module. In addition, student teams are expected to meet at least once outside of class to prepare and execute the actual research project they are designing during class.

Contribution to group work
The team work in this module consists of setting up a research project together around a real-world commissioned assignment brought in by an actual organization, the preparation of a public presentation about the research outcomes and methodological and ethical considerations. Students are also expected to actively participate in classroom debate.

Assessment
Students are graded on 1) their ability to express methodological issues and concerns in oral as well as written form, 2) their in-depth understanding of the assumptions behind each method and its connection to a theoretical tradition, and 3) their ability to identify and orally present ethical concerns in a case study.
