This seminar offers an exploration of postcolonial literatures, theory and other media in Europe, focused on issues such as borders, memory, identity, ethnicity, migration, nationalism, racism, xenophobia and the production, representation and perpetuation of otherness. The notion of Europe, and European identity will be analysed and deconstructed from a historical and critical postcolonial perspective engaging with the fields of postcolonial theory, gender studies, media studies, literary studies and European studies as well as political theory, sociology, religious studies, migration studies, visual studies and conflict studies. Seminar meetings will be led by several instructors -- including invited guest speakers -- who will approach the field from different disciplinary perspectives and research trajectories.

The course handbook is Postcolonial Transitions in Europe: Contexts, Practices and Politics (2015), edited by Sandra Ponzanesi and Gianmaria Colpani. The book can be bought at Savannah Bay (Telingstraat 13, Utrecht).

This course is the third course in the minor Postcolonial Studies, for more information about this minor see: http://students.uu.nl/en/node/351/postcolonial-studies.
