Firstly, students will be able to apply the knowledge of and insight into the key concepts acquired in the other English linguistics courses in this track to discussions on how language attitudes and language ideologies constrain and enable the teaching and learning of English globally. Secondly, they will be able to critically examine the relevant social contexts, and be able to join scholarly conversations surrounding multilingualism and language choice, with a high degree of autonomy. Thirdly, they will be able to report on these discussions, to both specialist and non-specialist audiences, in convincing academic English at C1 level or higher.
 
Inhoud
This course aims to provide a brief overview of educational and intercultural issues involved in using English as a non-native language on the continents of Europe and Asia. Topics include identity performance in popular music, multilingualism and language choice, othering and cultural representation, attitudes to teaching, norms and practices in European and Asian Englishes, with a focus on Dutch and Chinese Englishes. Lectures and tutorials will be interactive requiring students to engage in classroom debate and respond to other students' papers and presentations.

This course concludes the Social Life of English specialisation.
