The course provides an overview of the most important critical theories in Western Europe: from Karl Marx to Michel Foucault, Edward Said, and Judith Butler. How does literature represent and shape the world and the powers and structures that make up our society and identity? Students will learn to work with theoretical concepts as a method of research.
This is the only course in the first year of Literary Studies that is English-only. There is no Dutch track variant, in order to prepare the Dutch track students properly for their – English-only – specialisation in the second year. The course pays special attention to profiency in English and serves to alert students who feel not yet up to specialisation to the option of first taking more training in English (in courses set up by the English department).
