The development of photography, as an art, from its invention in the 19th century, to the present. Historical debates about whether or not photography can be an art. The aesthetics of photography in modern and contemporary photographic art. The reciprocal relation and influence between modern and contemporary art and photography. Conceptual photographic art practices will be compared with aesthetic photography. Theories and ideas as well as photography and art criticism is a major field of inquiry. The students will visit exhibitions and museums, watch films and documentaries about art and photography and listen to guest speakers.
