Students who have completed the course have acquired skills in analysing complex literary texts and in connecting them with their immediate historical contexts. They will be able to formulate their analyses in the relevant critical vocabulary. They have learnt to report on their reading in written and spoken English.

Overview of English literature from the middle of the seventeenth century to the late twentieth century, within the context of a range of socio-cultural, historical and intellectual developments. A selection of texts by more and less canonical authors will be read. The texts will be discussed in relation to their immediate contexts and, in this way, a picture will be created of their complex interconnection.
