Cursusdoelen
The successful student has developed the sophisticated critical vocabulary and analytical tools required to enable her/him to respond in a complex fashion to literary and cultural texts from the English-speaking world, in doing so displaying a high level of proficiency in written and spoken English and a command of academic referencing.
Inhoud
The lecture introduces the study of English-language literary texts and genres, literary concepts, and literary criticism. The Writing seminar takes a process writing approach: students present their essay at various stages and receive peer and instructor feedback. The Speaking seminar practises argumentation techniques through group discussions & presentations based on literary texts drawn from the Anglophone world.

Algemeen
The lectures offer an essential introduction to literature in English, with a focus on genre. Poetry, prose and drama from the Anglophone world are analysed, and key literary terms are explained and applied. Developments in literary criticism are surveyed, and students are encouraged to respond critically both to primary and secondary texts. Students primarily interested in improving their English writing and presentation skills are referred to Academic English (EN1V14001).

Voorbereiding bijeenkomsten
Students are required to read all set texts, write assignments, and to study material on literary concepts for mini-tests.

Beoordeling
The successful student is able to apply literary theory to the writing of a literary essay in accurate and clearly structured English; acquire the speaking skills required to respond to literary & cultural texts in an oral examination; acquire the academic vocabulary to facilitate the reading and writing of literary & cultural texts relevant to the degree.
