Persuasion is a crucial but also elusive force in European history. This course explores how individuals created, developed and applied forms of persuasion through different media of communication. It focuses in particular on textual, visual and oral media and the significance of the rhetorical tradition. We will address questions such as: how did rulers, writers, painters and preachers try to persuade their audiences? What is the significance of charisma? How can we study the persuasive power of historical sources?
