In this course you learn about methods and techniques in ICT research in its context. You will develop basic skills in applying research methods. After this module you can:
  • Perform a scientific research literature study
  • Formulate a testable question
  • Set up and implement a scientific research project
  • Select and apply quantitative methods of analysis
  • Report on your research

Position in the curriculum:
This course is offered at the beginning of the second year. The course is compulsory for students who follow the information science bachelor. In the course we pay explicit attention to the context of scientific research in information science. In the first year scientific research in different subjects (eg Designing Interactive Systems, Organisations and ICT) are briefly discussed. Knowledge of and skills in research methods play an important role in other 2nd and 3rd year courses such as the Onderzoeksproject.
Inhoud
Information and communication processes in social systems and support of these processes by means of ICT are key topics in the field of information science. These processes are studied from both a scientific and a design perspective. To this end, it is important that you as an information science expert have an understanding of scientific methods and research and data analysis. In this module you learn which research method to use, which methods for analysis go with it and how you can report the results. Basically we follow the empirical cycle:
  • Problem formulation
  • Various research methods
  • Different methods of analysis
  • Description of results and reporting
In addition to knowledge about various methods of scientific research, we pay attention to basic knowledge of inferential statistics, and you learn how to work with the statistical software package SPSS.
