Insight into relevant theories in the field of memory studies and public history; practice in analysing narratives and images from different genres; an ability to critically identify their mode of engaging with the public and the nature of their truth claims; the ability to formulate critical insights.

What societies remember about the past is constantly subject to change and often subject to fierce debate. In this course we will review some of the theoretical literature relating to the question why and how such debates take place. In particular we will consider the role played by different cultural forms and media (histories, documentaries, novels, monuments, the visual arts) in the dynamics of public debate.
