Studenten verwerven kennis en inzicht in de belangrijkste verschijnselen en theorieën op het grensvlak van semantiek en pragmatiek en de manieren waarop die verschijnselen onderzocht en die theorieën getoetst worden.

In de interpretatie van een uiting komen grammaticale, lexicale, logische, conceptuele, contextuele en communicatieve factoren bij elkaar. De semantiek en pragmatiek bestuderen samen hoe dat gebeurt en wat voor consequenties dat heeft voor de verwerking en verwerving van taal. In dat onderzoek komen theoretische modellen en experimentele onderzoeksmethoden bij elkaar. Deze cursus besteedt aandacht aan het onderzoek op het grensvlak van semantiek en pragmatiek en theorie en experiment aan de hand van een aantal onderwerpen, zoals implicaturen, prototypicaliteit, referentie, coercion.
(English: The interpretation of an utterance lies at the intersection of grammatical, logical, conceptual, contextual, and communicative factors. Semantics and pragmatics study how those factors determine meaning and what the consequences are for the processing and acquisition of language. In that study theoretical models and experimental research methods come together. This course is about research at the interface of semantics and pragmatics, of theory and experiment, focussing on a number of topics, like implicatures, prototypicality, reference, and coercion.)
